"Groban has an amazing range, at least three and a half octaves when we include his gorgeous falsetto"

Thanks Janette! You found a better description than I did - I'll have to look for that one.

Debbie....guess we both had the same idea this morning...my curiosity got the best of me about this range thing..so I went online this morning also...and found this quote regarding JG's "Closer" cd...

"Groban has an amazing range, at least three and a half octaves when we include his gorgeous falsetto"

So, I guess we both learned something today... laugh.gif

Other than that, to compare these two singers on any other basis becomes purley subjective and personal. They are both very different and both tremendously gifted men.

I agree 100%!! I did read somewhere on the internet this morning that Josh has "nearly a 3 octave range". In any event, I know my husband was impressed when I told him both their ranges. He's not a Christian but he does appreciate David's vocals; I only have one Groban CD which I don't play very much so he's not as familiar with him.

Debbie,

Josh Groban has been labeled a baritenor....sort of mid-way between a baritone and a tenor. He has said that he is a 'tenor in training', meaning he is striving to broaden his range further into tenor territory. David IS a true tenor. In addition, he has a recorded range of over 3 octaves so that can be proven. E-2 (Just as I Am) to F-5 in 'When God Dips His Love in my Heart' and 'I'll Be Singing with the Saints'.

I am not nearly as aquainted with Josh's vocal range but if your friend can substantiate a recorded range greater than 3 octaves (falsetto not included)...then there could be an objective debate. It's highly unlikely, in my opinion.

Other than that, to compare these two singers on any other basis becomes purley subjective and personal. They are both very different and both tremendously gifted men.

Regards,
Bevan

PS: James, do you have any music of Jeff or Tim Buckley that demonstates their 4 octave range? If so, could you direct me to it? I would love to hear it. Thanks.

Also, in my opinion, there is no comparison with David and Josh...I love them both for totally different reasons..David's message and vocal range is incredible!! Josh just sings beautifully,,

I only want to say that as far as I'm concerned there's no comparison to David....secondly, as someone so wonderfully put it, David uses his "gift" to sing the "gift givers" praises...thirdly, David could ask for more with his tickets, and probably people would still buy them, but that's the difference between a ministry, and simply just making a living out of it. I believe David does both, and when it's a ministry, I personally believe it's just not right to ask outrageous prices for tickets...kinda takes away from it, ya know?
Sorry...I probably shoulda just kept my trap shut, but I'm always so late getting to these, that I'd always miss out on giving my most "humble" opinions....lol biggrin.gif......not that they matter much, but I feel better anyway...lol laugh.gif

Did you get an answer to your original question yet???

More or less - still don't know Josh's range but Lee answered the question about David's range.

Good, glad you found out what you wanted to know. I gave you about a quarter of an answer. LOL

I was really only kidding though. I just said that since it had so much activity since I saw this thread last before I left work at 5. laugh.gif

David's voice overall is way stronger. I think he is better trained, but in a different way. David has learned to transition from his upper range to his lower range and back without breaks in the tone. He can fully do 3 octaves with power when needed at both ends of the spectrum.

Thanks Lee! This is what I was looking for. And Janette - I listened to both versions of O Holy Night which were both excellent - and you're right that David knocked it out of the park. I always thought Josh was a tenor (until today) and after listening to both versions of O Holy Night, I can hear the difference. When David hits those "dippy" notes, I get chills up and down my spine! And like someone earlier in this thread opined, I wonder if Josh knows how to "dip"?

So sorry for starting up a can of worms with this thread - we can now put it to rest until someone else brings the subject up!! Maybe we should have Mark make a compiled sticky about all the David vs. Josh threads!
