My friend, Linda M. & I met OKBill at the Mabee Center in Tulsa on November 21, 2009 as volunteers for the Gaither Vocal Band Reunited Tour. Deana Warren, with the tour, took the volunteers through the ground floor back door at 4 pm. As she gave us instructions in a hallway, Rory & Kevin walked by us. Someone said hi to Rory & I said hi to Kevin. He said, “How are y’all? We made dinner for you!” They were on their way to catering. We went up an elevator to the main floor with the artists’ product tables. Jack Daniels walked by us and said, “Hi friends!” We were already assigned to David’s table. Jack said that he needed two more people for Michael English’s table. Michelle & Bryce showed up later, and Jack asked them to work at David’s satellite table – his 2nd table. We only had 9 copies of O Holy Night left and sold those quickly, before the concert even started! OKBill was telling people that I was in the audience and would sign the CD for them! Ha! He was selling a lot of The Voice CD, by telling people that David would sing track 4 Nessun Dorma as a solo. Then at intermission, everyone would be looking for the opera song and buy The Voice CD, so they should buy it now and beat the crowd! I started telling everyone the same thing. Jack showed us pictures of AJ, his new baby, on his cell phone. He had a picture of Jimmy, his oldest son, playing guitar, with AJ “singing in the background”.
Just after 6 pm, we sat inside the concert hall near the product table. Gordon Mote was amazing singing and playing the piano! The Booth Brothers were very energetic! I loved their songs, especially Ask the Blind Man. This is the first time I had seen them live. SSQ was next with a cappella and new Christmas songs. About an hour into the concert, I went down to the floor seats to find a closer seat. I found a second row aisle seat and asked the man next to me if this was someone’s seat. He said it was, but his wife said, “They never showed up, so you can sit there.” After Lynda Randle, the Gaither Vocal Band came on stage opening with Alpha and Omega! They sang the a cappella Love of God and sounded beyond amazing together! Journey to the Sky was next after a long introduction, about the Jordanaires, by Bill Gaither. It was so long, Mark Lowry sat down on the piano bench next to Gordon. Mark took off his glasses, took Gordon’s sunglasses and put them on! He said, “Good Lord, these sunglasses are filthy! No wonder you can’t see!” He tried to put his glasses on Gordon and then gave him back his sunglasses!
David sang his solo Nessun Dorma and received a standing ovation, as usual! The Gaither Vocal Band sang I Believe in a Hill Called Mt. Calvary, What a Day That Will Be and Mark singing Make it Real, ending with the wonderful Worthy the Lamb, before intermission! It was a busy time at the product table! One Wintry Night CD sold out, also! A couple of people even asked me to pass a CD or picture to David so that he could sign it. I had to tell them to wait in line. There was still a line to get David’s autograph, when he had to leave to go back to the stage. He came up behind us, put his arms around us, saying, “Thanks, you guys, so much!” Linda told him she could listen to him sing the phone book in Italian! I yelled after him, “I could hear you sing all night!” He smiled and I continued, “So when are we going to have the chance to hear you sing all night, again?” He laughed and headed back to the stage sing!
The GVB & SSQ sang together, Like a River & Swing Low Sweet Chariot, as we sold more CDs at the product table. Mark Lowry sang Mary Did You Know during the second half, with Michael & DP singing BGV. I went back down to the floor seats. The man, who was on the second row, was now sitting in the aisle seat. To my surprise, there were 2 unoccupied seats front row center! That’s where I sat during the end of the concert. Rock of Ages was sung by Tim from SSQ, Mark, DP and Michael. Lynda Randle, the Booth Brothers and Charlotte Richie were spot-lighted again. I Then Shall Live and Because He Lives ended the evening with SSQ & GVB! Linda M. joined me in the front row for the last song. We didn’t want to leave and stayed until we heard DP belt out “He reigns!” David didn’t come back to the product table after the show, but Lynda Randle and Gordon Mote walked behind us & DP’s product table in order to reach their product tables through the crowd! I told Gordon he was awesome! He said, “You are so kind.” We had so much fun telling people about DP’s great CDs & DVDs, and his upcoming concert in Broken Arrow on Valentine’s Day! Several that stopped by the product table had many of his CDs already and were looking for his newest CD The Voice and Christmas CDs! I’m sure we’ll see many of these phans on Valentine’s Day next year!
