Gaither predicts, though, that a gospel classic will have the audience soaring.
"You've not heard O Holy Night," he said, "until you have heard David Phelps sing O Holy Night."

As the radio stations begin to play Christmas music this season, I have to say that I have found myself switching the stations very often. Especially when "O Holy Night" is being sung.
David.....you have spoiled me with that song! No one else comes even close to how you sing it! I just can't bring myself to listen to any other artists' version.

Now if only the radio stations would play YOUR version more often....................

I know this is not 'news' in the sense that it is fresh and new and no one has heard it before, but I found this article that was printed on Dec. 17. before one of the Ohio Gaither Homecoming Christmas events. Make sure you read all the way to the end! smile.gif

Gospel reunion alive with sounds of season

BY MICHELE LEMMON

More than a half-century ago, before he became a gospel-music star, Bill Gaither was scouring central Ohio in search of his big break.
As a 19-year-old, he spent several months in town with friends -- trying to enter the gospel-music business.
"We were trying to do it professional, and we starved to death," said Gaither, who will stop Friday at Nationwide Arena with his Gaither Homecoming Christmas Tour.
From his home in Alexandria, Ind., Gaither, 73, recently recalled seeking airtime on the Christian station WRFD and performing a show at the Ohio State Fair.
"It drove me back to college," he said of the experience.
Gaither eventually earned a degree in English from Anderson (Ind.) College and, in 1959, became a teacher.
He soon met his future wife and songwriting partner, Gloria -- also a teacher.
"I never gave up on the music," Gaither said. "I began to write before I met Gloria. . . . The songs were bigger than we were. And the change came when the songs started catching on in a major way."
Since their marriage in 1962, the couple have won eight Grammy Awards and earned the songwriter-of-the-year title eight times from the Gospel Music Association.
The concert Friday will feature many of their most famous tunes along with performances by Larry Gatlin, Buddy Greene and Jeff Taylor, among others.
Traditionally, at each tour stop, Gaither includes a homegrown chorus -- in this case, the Grove City Church of the Nazarene choir.
The highlight, he said, will involve the reappearance of the Gaither Vocal Band.
He reunited with former members Michael English, Mark Lowry, David Phelps and Wes Hampton in the spring.
With a 20-minute intermission, the typical concert lasts about 3 1/2 hours, said Gaither, who acknowledged keeping an eye on exit doors to ensure that audiences are enjoying what they hear.
"You can't have that much talent without it going long."
The final hour will offer what Gaither calls the "world's largest Christmas singalong."
One of his favorite moments arrives when the audience sings Silent Night while Greene plays the carol on the harmonica.
Gaither predicts, though, that a gospel classic will have the audience soaring.
"You've not heard O Holy Night," he said, "until you have heard David Phelps sing O Holy Night."

There are very few artist who I like singing Oh Holy Night. David's versions from Christmas in the Country and the way he sings it now are my favorites though. Was fortunate enough to attend his Christmas concert in Alexandria and to me that was the perfect way to start the Christmas season.

I am so with you guys on this. Nothing worse than being in a department store this time of year and hearing a song David has done. I just want to say... "Oh Pa-leeeze."
