6/25/08 Daily Devotional

One Prayer Daily Devotional
By Tim Stevens, Executive Pastor, Granger Community Church

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Wow. That is a huge statement. Do not be anxious about anything. With war and sickness, tornadoes and flooding, high gas prices and economic uncertainty in the headlines every day, how is it possible not to be anxious? Even small things can trip me up, like how many emails I still haven’t answered—or how I’m going to get through the pile on my desk so I can get to my kids track meet.

Is this an unrealistic expectation? How in the world are we supposed to never be anxious about anything?

It’s pretty cool that God gives us the answer in the same verse. I think He is acknowledging that there will be plenty to be anxious about. We can carry the load if we want, but He wants us to talk to Him about it. There is an unexplainable peace that comes when we lay our requests at the feet of Jesus. The problems don’t go away, but we have the strength to face them, and Jesus protects our hearts and minds from an overwhelming anxiety.

Could it be that God is binding our churches together to show the world a different way to respond to the problems around us? Perhaps our One Prayer today could be, “God, give me the grace to rely on you every minute today, whatever happens or doesn’t happen, that I will experience your incomprehensible peace.”

What are you turning over to God today?

(Tifferz)
here's my response
Some things that Unity can be promoted by are agreeing to disagree, remembering we are on the same team, and putting aside differences to see the big picture. To list them seems pretty easy but to put them in action is totally another challenge within itself. To let go of selfish pride in 'knowing that i'm right' is a hard thing when I can be very stubborn about things. Knowing that God is bigger than all of these issues allows myself to let go of my stubborn ways.
FInding your spiritual gifts, I feel is finding what you are passionate about. God gave you passions to be able to use them for Him. My passion is helping others and throughout my life i've really developed my skills and abilities (that I thought I didnt have) to help others around me and in my community. I used to question my abilities but God has helped me through the tough stops to be a better person to influence others. It's always a continuing learning process. I love that I can always learn from others to shape myself to be more of who God wants me to be and let go
of my wants. [/color]

Thank you for the encouraging words...I often get stuck on worrying about little things - forgetting how big our God is and how little he worries! smile.gif
