JOURNAL

Update

Hi all you Phelps Phans out there...

I just got back from a weekend out with the Gaither Vocal Band. I think anyone who saw me this weekend would have no doubt that I was having a blast. When Bill called and asked me to come fill in while Guy was out, I was more than happy to fill in. There's not much I wouldn't do for Bill. He's been an incredible mentor for me in life and in my career. So really the only challenge was making schedules work. they sent me the music right away, but I didn't get it until I returned from Australia. As I put the cd in the player I got a smile on my face. It was so great to hear those songs again and sing along...Alpha and Omega still gives me chills. The new songs are great too. I spent most of my time on those trying to learn lyrics.

I met the bus in Nashville on Wednesday evening. It didn't take long for us to all hit it off again. Of course I am in touch with Bill from time to time, but haven't spoken to the other guys in a while. Kevin and I have always been kindred spirits...a little sarcastic and never at a loss for words. Marsh is one of the nicest guys I know and it was a real great chance to get to know Wes. We laughed until our voices were tired. This group of guys has to be one of the best Bill has had.

After we stopped for dinner, outside of Nashville and then got busy rehearsing. I think our voices sounded great together. I haven't sung in a group like that since I left the GVB so it was a blast to jump in on a part again. Everyone has such a great mind for harmony and voicing--there's really not a weak link. We rehearsed for a couple of hours and went through 10 or 12 songs a few times. I really enjoyed switching parts with Marsh and Wes. We didn't do this when I was in the group--I was always on the tenor part. I liked singing the lead or even baritone part for a song or two.

The first concert in Amarillo went pretty well. I started out with End of the Beginning just before the GVB came on. I have to admit that it felt pretty good to hear the crowd cheer when the music started. They said the Vocal Band set went well, but i was pretty much trying to hang on to lyrics much of the time. The other nights in Austin and Wichita Falls were much more relaxed to me.

The fans made me feel so welcomed. No one threw tomatoes. In fact I got an, "I love you, David!" at a choice quiet moment. I guess you can't beat that. Anyway, I had a great time touching on a bit of nostalgia and reconnecting with old friends. I think I might have made some new Phans as well.

I hope to see all of you, Phans new and old, this Christmas. We're already gearing up for the annual tour--brushing up on parts and pulling out some surprises too! We'll be featuring selections from the new video Oh Holy Night, but as you may know I love to add in some things you can only hear if you come out to a concert. So get your tickets now before the good seats are gone!

Before I go, I have to tell you how much I appreciate your loyal support and prayers. You have been so great to keep spreading the word about my new projects and bringing in new phriends. You are truly the best fans anywhere!

Blessings,

dp

Presentation in Brazil

David Phelps tries to arrange a presentation here in Piracicaba city the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil! I admire your work and love your music! The DVD that I liked most was the Legacy of Love! The songs that were presented were very beautiful, especially the song Just As I Am! If a day comes into your head to try to come here in Piracicaba, let me know by e-mail, that I talk to the church here! I hope your answer! A big hug!

The voice of Christmas

David,

I have always loved music and your version of O Holy Night makes me cry tear up every time that I hear it. During the holidays, I make it a point to set aside some time to listen to Christmas music and spend more time with God. Yours is the first and last in the play list. You have been blessed by God with such a wonderful voice and it is so nice to see you sharing that blessing with the world. A Blessed and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Alpha and Omega

I wanted to comment on when you sing Alpha and Omega.... I heard you sing this in Jax FL in what must have been 2002. It is still a defining moment in my life . I have not heard a more glorious song in my 40 years on this Earth. When you sing this song solo it is such a sermon of praise! I have it with the GVB but....it is not the same. I am still prayerful that one day you will release it solo. I am trying to find tickets for your concert in MD for Christmas this year.... I pray YOU sing Alpha and Omega again this Christmas season. Your gift is truly a blessing from our wonderful loving God. Thank you for using it for Him.
With prayer for you and your family. God bless. ------Julie

David's "Update" (B4 2008 Christmas)

I just read it ! Having attended the FEB 09 GVB concert in Huntsville, AL recently, I'm all pumped up again !!
Your comment that you STILL get chills when singing Alpha and Omega meant a lot to me. As for me, I get chills hearing you sing EVERY song.
Keep it up young man ! You're a gift from God to everyone who hears you. It's surely tough on you pumping out "the money notes" (I purchased the Reunion DVDs !), but ... Oh My; the lead-ups and "the building" of the songs that culminate in those wonderful "notes" are so magnificent, it makes a person smile ear-to-ear and, usually jump to his or her feet !! There's no thing and no one like you, Sir; You're The Man ! While I missed seeing Guy in Huntsville (I saw you both in San Jose in 2003), I'm so Blessed that I was able to hear you here in Huntsville, so excited in fact I had to tell my friends (portions of which follow). It's a bit long, but it's from the heart of this 65 year-old whom God has given The Gift of Music Appreciation:

"John,
I love to watch Bill Gaither's gospel singing show on the Huntsville PBS channel.
I always seem to get all wound up enjoying the singing. Often, my face hurts after watching; I wonder why, and deduce it's because I've been smiling so hard !!!
When I was living in California in 2003, I went to my first Gaither concert (in the arena where the San Jose Sharks play hockey). Being a solo attendee, I got a seat in the 4th row !!!!! That night, I heard David Phelps sing and was blown away, bought 4 CDs, shook his hand and told him "You're THE MAN !" He was very gracious.
I think I raved in an email about my experience, and you would have received it John (if I'm remembering correctly).
Well, last night I went solo to the VBC Arena for a Gaither live concert. Gaither had the Signature Sound and Gaither Vocal Band quartets & a couple others soloists.
I was not disappointed !!
I paid $xx for a 6th row from the top nose-bleed seat at a 90 degree angle to the stage. The house went dark at 7:05 and the show was over at 5 minutes to 11 with a 30 minute intermission; we all received our money's worth !! I got so excited, I jumped up and down probably 5 times in the first half of the concert. We all received a little LED push-button lite (no more cigarette lighters !) to wave. I sure used mine.
Gosh, those guys can sing !!!

For the 2nd half, I went down to the mezzanine level walk-way where the rail is, so as to be closer, and my vantage point was from from the side and slightly behind. But it was where I wanted to be. I danced a little, praised God with uplifted arms a little, sang a little; you would have been proud !!!
So, about 30 minutes after the end of the concert (approx 11:30pm !!), I was able to get to Phelp's display in the hallway where his people were selling his stuff, he was shaking hands, allowing pictures, etc., just like I remember him doing in San Jose. Finally, I got to shake his hand, looked him in the eye, and said "I'm sure you remember me. I'm the guy that shook your hand after the San Jose, CA concert in 2003 and told you 'You're The Man.' Well, you're STILL The Man !!" He cocked his head a little in thanks, we laughed and I turned him over to next person waiting for him. I stood around for about 5 minutes watching him deal with the people, then slowly walked to my car in the cold night air, just thoroughly satisfied.

That's tedious stuff Phelps does after a concert night after night after a bunch of singing, but it's great he does it for his fan base. Everytime he sang, he brought the place down, I being one of the loudest, "overcome" lovers of his sound. It was just so exciting for me, I nearly wept a few times.
Gaither, in introducing a soloist towards the end of the concert (and who sang one song), told the crowd the soloist grew up "worshipping" Phelps (who sat right there on stage behind them) as the best singer in the world. Someone in the crowd yelled out very plainly, "He still is !!!!" and the whole place erupted in applause !! Phelps smiled from ear to ear !!!
On my way out in a thin crowd, I thought the guy in front of me looked familiar. He was there walking out with his girl and no other entourage, just a regular guy like you and me. I didn't approach him, but watched him and wondered what his life was like. He was the soloist that Gaither said liked Phelps so much. He sang his one song exceptionally well too, Phelps and Wes joining in at the end to everyone's joy.

There: I had to tell someone about it, someone that would appreciate the great experience I had. It would have been better if you had been there to share the joy with me !

Peace and Harmony my Brother !!

World Tour

There are soooo many guys over here who absolutely LOVE you
so when will you come by and say hello??

COME TO ENGLAND!!! :D

And there will be no tomatoes, thats a promise!!

Appreciating your GREAT music

Hallo David,

I just read the journal, and was wondering, just WHAT made u think someone would throw tomatoes at u?

Anyway, jokes apart, I am VERY fussy while listening to music, and am unimpressed with today's latest musicians. We are very devoted to Gospel music & are indeed so glad to see such INCREDIBLY Beautiful music and those complex arrangements u create. But most of all, I am touched by the words u include that make every song a prayer.

Thank you, you help people pray.

Much love & prayers,
Rachael Alphonso,
India

This is Cynthia from India again. Miss your music so much and I have tried so much to have you call but am really sad and disappointed that your not so reachable. Here in India, we don't get to see you perform Live. But the least you can do is keep in touch with your phans in places you don't go. God has blessed you with such a gracious voice and all we can do is just watch you on You tube or listen to you on DVD. That's it. Please, please send me a mail at least. Hopefully some day before I leave this earth, I could at least see you in person.

God bless you and hide you behind the shadow of his cross and bless your family and ministry too!.....

Love

Bad Trailer! Great Music!

Hey David,
I wanted to thank you for a fabulous concert in West Des Moines Iowa.. You brought your magnificent music to our church, Hope Lutheran, and rocked the house...
It was the first night of your Christmas tour 2008 and you had a little trouble getting to us.. Something about a bad trailer hitch and you almost lost the trailer..
You were late getting to the church.. I think we really scrambled you all up when we did the sound check.. You all were so very patient with us..Thank you!
Anyway, I was one of the choir members that was so honored to sing with you that night..
I have followed you for many years, starting when you first sang with GVB and continued on with each or your solo albums.. I am so very inspired by you and the way you deliver a song. You have a very unique gift of speaking right to the heart.
I have never been so moved by anyone vocalist in my life.. Your ministries have brought me closer to Christ... Thank you Lord...
Thank you for sharing your gifts so graciously and humbly. You are so very blessed, and I am blessed by your gifts.
I wish you and your family a wonderful and peaceful New Year.
May God continue to bless you David..
In Christ
Sandy Fisher

You have touched my heart

I am not much of a fan kind of person. I love music and listen more for the words and meaning of a song than I do to the individual's voice or style of music.
A several months ago, my chuch had a little fine arts camp for the kids to give them something to do during the summer. My 10 year old granddaughter was part of the drama team that did a dowel rod drama to End of the Begining. I had heard the song before, but as I said earlier, I don't really pay attention to who is singing, just the song and what it is saying. The first time I heard that song I was blessed by it and told my family about it. I even wrote your name down when the radio announcer said who the song was by. (that is something I never have done before.)
When my granddaughter did the drama, her instructer told her to go on You Tube and search "Drama Stix" to see another group of kids who did the same thing. That was my introduction to You Tube and to your passion. After watching the drama, I put your name in the search and started listening to songs like The Singer, Virtuoso and Second Fiddle. My heart rejoiced. I was telling a friend about you and explained to her that your music has touched my heart in places it has not been touched in years.
I searched the web and found that you were going to be in Waco on Dec. !6th and I got tickets for me, my daughter and my best friend. They were pretty much just coming along for the ride because they knew how much I have talked about you, your music and your passion for Christ in the past several months.
We got there 2 hours early, coming down from Arlington I did not want any thing to get in the way on me sitting front and center to watch you perform. Yes, I had turned into a phan for the first time in my 53 years. We were first in line when the door opened and I got so sit where I had hoped to. You probably don't remember but I was the first person that raised my hand to sponsor a child in Africa after the first person took the child that you had with you.
Half way through the first portion, my friend leaned over to me and said that she now understood why I was so pumped about you and your music. Then you sang That's What Love Is. Every time I hear this I think of my friend who is a foster mom. She and her husband have had some very difficult children in their home and has NEVER given up on any of them. She has had feces thrown at her, she has been beat up, you name it, she has been through it, yet she has never asked for a child to be removed from her home. I told her what I thought when ever I heard this song and she started crying. At the end of the concert, you autographed one of the CD's that I purchased. There was so much that I wanted to tell you but you were busy and there was quite a line still waiting. I hope you don't think I was rude, because I did not really talk to you at all, just smiled and said thank you.
The day after the concert, my daughter told me that you touched her heart in ways that has not happened in a long time. I could not believe that she used almost the exact same words that I did when I was describing you.
David, thank you! Thank you for using the gifts that God gave you to glorify Him. You have helped me walk closer to Him through your ministry, the insight that you put in your songs,
and the passion that you have for Christ.
You are in my prayers,
Your newest phan

Just read your entry on David Phelps' website

"Reads to me" that you were and are as touched by David's voice and music as I am.

I put my "feelings" out there in this venue just a few minutes ago, and before reading your comments. I couldn't help but write this after reading your entry. Even though it's longer than yours, you might like to read it.

How Blessed we are to Appreciate David, let alone simply be able to hear !! How Very Blessed are We !

WOW

I must say you are incredible!! I just seen your Christmas Show on TBN, and I had to stop everything I was doing at that moment! Your voice was like a mighty angel sent from heaven above! I hate to say, I have never heard your music before, but I know you now, and I love your music. I'm buying your CD now, and will be a loyal fan going forward. I'm going to share your music with others. Hopefully you can make it to the Chicago area sometime in the near future. God Bless you and yours this Holiday season, and thank you for bringing a voice of peace at a time in my life that isn't so peaceful. You made my day and aided in refocusing my out look on God is always in control !!! Thank you

God Bless you,

what a fun oppurtunity

It was so cool to hear they (GVB or Bill) invited you back. I am sure there was no one there not happy to see you back. Even if it was for a short time. How fun though.

There is sure a whole lot of Minnesotans who are hoping to see you again soon in the near future. I know it's cold here but its sure pretty...hehe.

We hope to see you again real soon..

Many blessings to you and your family

hi DAVID! Finally!

Shalom David.

Finally, I am able to post you a comment now on your site.
It's been my dream to share with you how I feel since the day I saw your videos in you tube, Men!!! I can't contain myself.

I'm from the Philippines, a Filipino phan of course.Ü
"No More Night" was the first videos I've watched. It really moved me to tears. I can't help myself but cry every time I hear that song. I just really love that song, even up to now. Actually I just downloaded some of your songs and videos to my PSP, and listened to them during past times. I am joining our church cantatas too, and sometimes I used to sing solo during our church service.

Well, I guess I don't have the luxury of the time for now. I hope you would be able to do a concert here in the Philippines. I will be looking forward to it and hope that we could meet..haha.. Our church is a member of Baptist International Outreach here in the Philippines.

God Bless to your upcoming concert tours.
Take care..

tours n' stuff

We just discovered you watching TBN with J. Crabb (sp?)...WOW - we were mesmerized by your voice, but particularly recognized your HEART! We can't wait to buy some albums, we're your newest Phans...at least for the next ten minutes...

So, looking over your calendar, we noticed a distinct absence of...sniffle...Florida concerts...
Um...where else does EVERYONE want to be at Christmas-time, but sitting back in a short-sleeved shirt with flowers all over it, catching some rays, drinking cold iced tea (or lemonade)and wiggling your toes in the sand??? ;)
Sigh...any chance you'll be down in the near future? I noticed a big hole in your schedule for the whole month of January?????? Kinda cold up there in January, y'know...hint hint

(Okay, we're new phans, we get one request don't we?? )

Looking forward to getting your albums and catching up to you at a concert somewhere along the line!

DP's Tour

Hi Vizwiz...Welcome to DP's board...Glad you finally discoved David...How exciting....Florida is usually included on David's southern tour schedules. ...In the past, January usually has been a rest time after the Christmas Tours...but ya never know what will come about with a "The Voice" tour!!! Just keep watching his tour schedule!!

A Gift Most Treasured

Hi DP.

I want to share my thanks to You for Your recent concert here in St. Clair Shores, MI. You see, Your visit here was just about a month after the unexpected passing of my Dad who was a 'big time' and TRUE fan of PAVAROTTI . About one year before your visit, I sat with my Dad on his 76th birthday (Dec.15th) in Row 4, center stage at Your Christmas Concert 2006 in SCS, MI. He enjoyed your concert so very much and ALWAYS loved hearing a great voice. When he heard Your Great Voice, he also heard You share God's message of HOPE. God sent that message of Hope right back to us through You at Your recent concert. It was a tremendous comfort to my Mother who said through her tears over and over, "I am so glad I came." DP, You are a Blessing.

You are appreciated more than you know

Hi, it's Alicia, Christopher's mom. I've said this before, but you are such a blessing to me for the influence you have made on my son Christopher. He has loved you since he was 3, he's 9 now and you made him the proudest little boy when he got to come on stage with you and the children during the OHN DVD taping. He is hooked on The Voice now. God Bless you and your family and I just love Lori and Sherri. We will see you in Concord, NC in december. Christopher is already geered up for it, he's so excited to get to see you again.
Love and Prayers and Safe Travels Always

You're so appreciated David!!

I have to say David....I have seen a video of one of these nights, and it was truly amazing!! I couldn't seem to get enough! Though I appreciate you solo, as I would never have even THOUGHT to check you out with the GVB, I can truly say what a blessing I have received in MANY of these songs! Thank you for giving your voice back to God, and allowing Him to use you through song!!

this phan's thanks . . .

David - I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see you at Austin and Wichita Falls. I am so grateful we were able to take advantage of this special opportunity to see you with the GVB. If we could clone you we could have the best of both worlds, for I love your solo work too. It was quite a thrill to get to share the excitement with the Homecoming fans. I hope we were able to recruit some new Phelps Phans.

David it was great watching the video of you with the GVB.....after all that is what drew me to watching more of you. You are an awesome artist. It just did the heart good.

Weekend with the GVB

David,
I didn't attend any of the concerts, however, it was great seeing all of the wonderful pictures & videos from the concerts. (Thank you so much, phamily & phriends, for sharing with all of us that were not able to attend. You're the best!!) You guys sounded amazing & I know you had a great time spending it with old friends. Looks like it was a fun time for all of you!!
I am looking forward to the Christmas Tour!! I love the Christmas season and can't wait to see some of the surprises you have in store! See you out there on the road!
Blessings right back at you, friend!!
(HEY, LORI !!)

It was so good to see you

It was so good to see you with the GVB again! As much as I hated it when you left, I prefer to see you solo, so I hope they don't talk you into coming back for good. ;)

Linda :)

That's my job

Hey!! I wasn't even in Wichita. It's my job to yell, "I Love You David!" as I whistle and scream my head off. Gee, I guess I'm not the only one anymore.?

Christmas Tour Wish List!

Hi David, First, congratulations on the fantastic new website--it is so well done, much easier to read, just looks really slick.

My sister and I were on cloud 9 seeing you with GVB in Austin last week. It was so unbelievable, still seems like a dream to me. You hit it out of the park on Because He Lives! And you are so gracious with your time with us after concerts--thanks for talking to us after the show, as you do at all your shows.

For the Christmas tour, I would very much love it if you guys will do your arrangement of The Singer and Hallelujah Chorus, just like on the OHN CD/DVD! Also, hoping for Nessun Dorma and/or Gentle Savior!!

God Bless, and again, congrats on all your many accomplishments--what a great year, David!
Love,
Monica (northern California)

there's always someone

Bill's right, I thought you told them to stay in the truck?

Thank you!

Hey David -
Although I wasn't able to attend any of the recent GVB concerts featuring you, I was able to enjoy them through the phans that were in attendance.
I am in awe of the advances your career has made in the last six months - you must be on cloud 9 :)

I, too, look forward to seeing you at a Christmas tour stop in less than a month. I can't wait!!!
BTW - I love surprises! I can only imagine what you have planned. Try and give the band more than 20 minutes notice this time if you decide to throw in a new song :)

Thank you again for everything you do for your phans. It's an honor to be a phan of yours.

See you soon and God bless!
Gretchen

Amarillo concert

Hey David-

First of all, it was SO good to see (and hear) you with the GVB again, even if only for a short time! And just a note from someone who was there...the first concert in Amarillo went more than well! It was FANTASTIC! If you were struggling to keep up with lyrics, no one in the audience knew a thing about it. You were awe-inspiring as always! Thanks for sharing your talents with the world!

Lesli

Wichita Falls Concert

I heard somebody yell out "I love you, David!" at the same concert. It seems like there is always somebody trying to heckle the artist!!!

DP Shout Out....

Debby was just having fun Bill...Hey...where are our icons?? I would insert the "roll eyes" here...then the "wink" then the "big" smile..LOL...Seriously dp...you were awesome in Austin and WF...I still get this huge smile on my face, along with cold chills, when I think of getting to hear you sing Let Freedom Ring...Live and in person with the GVB...Thanks for such a fun weekend!

Blessings to you.

I'm 21 and I'm madly in love with God. He has taken me from far far away. I love the old school songs so man many times I find myself watching the Gaither vocal band. I love you guys and you David have a wonderful voice. You also look like a big giant teddy bear:)

May the Lord continue to bless your ministry. I want to sing but had an accident. I hold a tune but not even close as you!

My name's David Phelps

Hi there, my name is David Phelps.
I'm not really friends with God anymore because when I needed him he turned his back on me. I found comfort in smoking my pipe which I packed with puff and listening to the 80's break-beat music.

not friends w/God

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble w/your friendship w/God. I hope that you will soon come to the place where you know that He will NEVER leave you nor forsake you. I don't know your circumstances. I can only speak from my own experiences. I've been quite angry at God myself before when it seemed He wasn't there for me. The sad reality is that He IS there, we just don't always get our way. I desparately wanted my cousin, age 54 to live after she had a sudden stroke. That's been 2 years ago, and it's still painful for me. I've also dealt w/all kinds of issues that are just plain wretched. But this earth is not our home, so we can't be expected to be truly happy here. Being a Christian, a friend of God, is not a promise to an easy road, simply a hope for the future based on faith in Jesus Christ. I hope you find your way back to your friend.
