A "scratch-vocal" is just a track where you don't really put anything into the performance: you can sing "lalala", hum, talk the lyrics, sing softly, etc. It's used primarily to hear the Music and where the Vocals come into play.
My band TRAG records everything "live" - all at the same time, in one room - So, I sing the Scratch just to keep time with everyone....then, I go back and sing a real Performance Track, and then add my own Backing Vocals on top of that.
After I saw this video clip for the first time, I told David that I liked his "scratch-vocal" after a concert & he laughed.
