Hi David,

I love your music and enjoy listening to you sing by yourself and with the vocal band. On the DVD Best of David Phelps you sang a song in Italian (Nessun Dorma) what does that mean? No English translation of the song or its title was listed. I tried to look up the translation in an Italian/English dictionary and could not find a definition. Thanks for your help.

Louisa...I think this is what you are looking for. I love hearing David sing it....it is so beautiful!

(Italian)
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o, Principessa,
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
che ti fa mia!
(Il nome suo nessun saprà!...
e noi dovrem, ahime, morir!)
Dilegua, o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba vincerò!
vincerò, vincerò!

(English)
Nobody shall sleep!...
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess,
in your cold room,
watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
No!...No!...
On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

Hey Louisa,
If you go to the blog section of David's board and tab back a few pages, there is a blog named Nessum Dorma in English please. David gives the English translation as well as a description of what is happening in the opera act this song is sung.

Susan pointed out where David explains the meaning of Nessun Dorma in his blog. Since I have nothing better to do right now ;-), I copied and pasted it for you:
David writes:

The song, Nessun Dorma, has sparked a lot of questions about the meaning of the lyrics over the past year.  Since it’s in Italian, each night many of you come to the table and ask me to give a brief translation.  I’ve had the opportunity to perform it nightly and it is truly an amazing piece of art.  I’m still honored to sing it.

The aria is from an opera titled, Turandot by Giacomo Puccini.  Below I have included the English translation of the aria, Nessun Dorma, and a short description of the events leading up to it in the story.  It might be nice to know about what I’m singing next time you listen.

In the act before this aria, the cruel and emotionally cold princess then decrees that none of her subjects shall sleep that night until the name of her suitor (Calaf) is discovered. If they fail, all will be killed.  As the final act opens, it is now night. Calaf is alone in the moonlit palace gardens. In the distance, he hears Turandot's heralds proclaiming her command. His aria begins with an echo of their cry and a reflection on Princess Turandot:

"Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Tu pure, o Principessa, nella tua fredda stanza, guardi le stelle che tremano d'amore, e di speranza!"  (English translation: "None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Even you, O Princess, in your cold bedroom, watch the stars that tremble with love and with hope!")

"Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me; il nome mio nessun saprà! No, No! Sulla tua bocca lo dirò quando la luce splenderà!"  ("But my secret is hidden within me; none will know my name! No, no! On your mouth I will say it when the light shines!")

"Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio che ti fa mia!"  ("And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!")

Just before the climactic end of the aria, a chorus of women is heard singing in the distance:

"Il nome suo nessun saprà... E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir!"  ("No one will know his name... and we will have to, alas, die, die!")

Calaf, now certain of victory, sings:  "Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!"  ("Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win! ")

Also, if you are interested, here’s a link to a great synopsis of the entire opera: http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/ ... opsis.aspx

As always, thank you again for all of your incredible support and kind words.  Enjoy and see you again soon,

dp
