Dee--This is a GREAT thread!! I've been here on the boards phor 7 years now and there are many more than me who have been here even longer. Every so many years someone'll start a thread like this which enables us all to get caught up on the latest additions to our phamily. Some stuff has been archived; phor that I am very thankful. Some of what we know about each other would make you cry. Some stories or posts would definitely make you think. While others would make you laaaaaaugh!!!! One of my most phavorite threads of all times was about 6 years ago and the title was something to the effect of "What Were Some Of Your Most Embarrassing Moments." (The winner--phor just about ALL of us was by SuziQ (I think it was) about 2 of her elderly aunts who went to their OBGYN doctor phor an annual visit. Oh. My. LOOOOORD.  :o     I still tell people about that story!!!     )

Ugh--I just looked up. Sorry!! 'Ran off track and then my brain just took off with it.    As always.    Sorry. Sorry.

Aaaaanywaaaay, with me and my high-phalootin' ways ;)  ......it's almost a question of what haven't I done? Since climbing the corporate ladder was never my thing, I've been lucky enough to engage in other endeavors. Right now, phor the last 7 years, I've been a retail clerk at a Pet Boutique shop in a "small amusement attraction" just outside Disney World here in Phlorida. (Old Town has 75 specialty shops, 8 restaurants, and multiple amusement rides.) It's really phantastic because I get to talk with people all night long who are always in a great mood because they're on vacation or out on a "date night." (I generally work the night shift by myself until almost midnight.) I mean, if ya like to prattle on (and on..... okay--and on), is this a perfect job or what?? ;) ;)

And as wonderful as this job is, my phavorite job of ALL times was working phor the state of Rhode Island on a ward in the vast state mental health hospital system. I worked phor 3 years back in the mid 70's with elderly women and also one 6 month stretch with teenage girls. This was before group homes, and the patients were basically "warehoused." IT WAS PHACINATING. I was able to wrangle permission (pleading, begging, and grabbing a supervisor's ankle and not letting go mighta had something to do with it) to try some new approaches. These were an attempt to brighten up the bleak environment and improve their quality of life, by reawakening their senses. Phirst I bought some paints and painted colorful paintings on the dayroom walls. Then I was able to hang up some plants (waaay up so that Edith wouldn't eat them!). And I brought in a record player so that I could play records to try to reach the semi-catatonic ones whom I just knew they were like Prego Spaghetti Sauce---they were IN THERE!! Toes would start tappin'--it was sooo wonderful!! ;) I brought in some perfume so my ladies could pheel the tiniest bit human again. And I even convinced the powers that be to let me do pet therapy..........before there was pet therapy thank yeeeeew verry much! ;) , when I would bring in my pets (even my pet skunk :D ) phor them to enjoy, etc. Each of my ladies' stories would break your heart.....but inspire you at the same time. (But that would be phor another thread....along with, come to think of it, how 2 of the 6 wards in our building were phor the criminally insane (all men). And how on a couple occasions some of the inmates overpowered the attendants and were, shall we say, coming over to say hello to us.....and they did not want to shake hands. THOSE were some "interesting" times I tell ya!!  )

As phor other jobs, well, let's see--over the years, part time and/or phull time, with many times both at once:

*Burger King--kinda says it all
*Retail--phrom Woolworth's--a big one in a mall (as a pet department manager), to a little one (candy shop) and several in between
*Sales--Olan Mills Photography--I was the one who tried to sell ya more of your (immediate/extended) phamily pictures than you wanted to buy. Just how much is Grandma Woo Woo worth, anyway? ;) ;)
*Dietary Aide--in a nursing home inside a retirement village. Scarier than you'd think--do not mix up a diabetic dinner with a sodium restricted one...and keep an eye on Edna who's diabetic and swipes other patients' desserts and hides them in her underwear drawer back in her room! She's a quick little minx! See?? There she goes--somebody intercept her! :o
*Housekeeping--hey, there, Marsha!! I'm right there wid cha! ;) Spent alotta time dusting and wiping and vacuuming and scrubbing and polishing and cleaning. Gaaawd how I HATE dusting. Can I get an "Amen??" (My asthma t'weren't too durned pleased neither! :x :x )
*Cashier--Ripley's Believe It Or Not Odditorium and a Las Vegas style magic show with professional dancers, etc. (Both were soooo cool!!)
*Manager--Miniature Golf Course and year round Haunted House--Tons and tons of phun with these

Such has been my life. I know. I know. More than what any of you EVER wanted to know. :? In my own defense, though, I DO hafta say that although it looks like--and, I concede, is a lot, I wasn't just phlitin' around, willy nilly--there were reasons why I had to leave each job (relocation, better opportunity, company went out of business, etc.). Just so ya know. ;) (That last part was brought to you courtesy of paranoia-r-us. )

So I don't wanna say I've "been around," but.......................

My jobs aren't as fascinating as Lauri's but here I go. I've been retired for 3 years after major back surgery. But before I retired, I worked as a waitress for 20 years, went to college after my divorce, work as a tutor (mostly in Math and with Special Needs students) in college, tutor services assistant (setting up tutors for students) for 25 years. But my most rewarding job, was being a teacher. I taught math at our community college for 3 years, until they changed they're criteria and you had to have a Master's degree to teach, and not a Bachelor's degree with years of experience. So I starting teaching anxiety classes. My biggest moments come when a student is struggling with a concept, then all of a sudden there is an "ah ha" moment. The light comes on and they finally understand. I really miss that. Anyway, I'm taking care of my grandkis and babysitting my great granddaughter, who is only 2 months old. Life is good.

I was a legal secretary for over 20 years. Not all at the same job.
I worked for bankruptcy lawyers, work for the District Atty at a
Court Reporting Agency and arbitration. Also the caferteria need-
ed help during the summer and in between my secretarial job was
a cook and behind he counter server. I really loved doing that and
got to know the people. Most ordered the same thing every day.
The only thing with that is when everyone else went home, I stayed
and did the office work.

My first job while in Secretarial School was part time at a florist.
That was kind of cool making up arrangements.

I am now a caregiver for my brother. Do not know if that is called
retirement or not.

Enjoy reading everyones comments.
Greetings from Long Island, New York

Hi, I'm Shonsaya from Frisco, Texas, and first heard David sing on one of the Gaither Cracker Barrel short TV shows that advertises the Gaither Gospel DVD's and CD's. My husband was really sick around this time and in a nursing home, so I bought "The Best of David Phelps" DVD and CD, the Australian one and the Better Days and would play the songs in my car as I drove back and forth to see my husband every day. I learned the songs and would sing them as I walked down the halls of the nursing home. David said he hoped he would be remembered by bringing hope to others along the way, and he certainly did this for me. His songs kept me going and I listened and sang from morning to night each day. I am driving to Fort Worth this weekend for two Gaither concerts and hope to see David on the stage. I can't wait! I love his passion and creativity... so thrilling!! I'm a writer and photographer but not working right now as I'm trying to get my life back on track as a new widow. God is good and I'm grateful for the years I spent with my husband, such wonderful memories. God bless you all, and God bless David and his lovely wife and children.
